Pinot Noir pairings, from chicken to pork, there are many strategies for pairing wine and food together. But an easy one to remember is congruent and contrasting.

  • Congruent – pairing wine and foods that have similar qualities
  • Contrasting – pairing wine and food with opposite qualities

The pride of the Willamette Valley, Pinot Noir, is one of the most food-friendly wine there is. Its fruit-forward notes, mild tannins and high acid make it an easy wine to pair with so many types of food. Often times, Pinot Noirs do well with congruent pairings.

Pinot Noir Pairing Suggestions

Bacon Stuffed Mushrooms

Many Pinot Noirs have a beautiful earthy fruitiness that is complemented by many foods, mushrooms being one. Bacon stuffed mushrooms are a delicious pairing with a glass of Oregon Pinot Noir. The acidity of the wine is balanced by the richness of the bacon and the mushrooms.

French Onion Soup

Onions and other alliums are a great match for Pinot Noire. As are hard and nutty cheese like Gruyere and Comté. So why not enjoy a dish that has both? The slow-cooked onions, beef broth, and cheesy toast are beautifully matched with a glass of Pinot Noir.

Duck à l’Orange

Duck is a classic pairing for Pinot Noir. The acid in the wine is balanced by the fattiness of the duck. Pinot Noir’s are also known for their faint citrus notes. Playing off the citrus used in the French dish Duck à l’Orange is a great example of a congruent pairing.

Mushroom Risotto

Another classic pairing, Mushroom Risotto will highlight the fruitiness of a Pinot Noir. The dish is earthy, creamy and starchy, all aspects that complement a glass of Pinot Noir beautifully.

Thanksgiving Dinner

There might not be anything more perfect for a Pinot Noir than a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. It is a people-pleaser and light-bodied, so it won’t feel too heavy with the big meal. White meats like chicken and turkey are great matches for Pinot Noirs, as well as creamy sides like mashed potatoes. There is a reason that cranberry sauce is served with Thanksgiving. It brings notes of acid and fruit to balance out the rich, creamy and starchy dishes on the table. A glass of Pinot Noir can serve the same purpose.
